My PhD dissertation is to discuss the evolution of the Propitious Rituals in Tang and Song China. Vertically, the Propitious Rituals were divided into three ranks: Major Sacrifices, Medium Sacrifices and Minor Sacrifices. Horizontally, there were four kinds of rituals in the Propitious Rituals, including Rituals of Heavenly Deities, Rituals of Earth Deities, Rituals of Human Deities, and Shidian Rituals. The Southern Suburban Rituals, the Northern Suburban Rituals, the Ancestral Temple Rituals, and the Confucius Temple and Military Temple Rituals were the representatives of the four kinds of rituals. By studying the System of Major Sacrifices, Medium Sacrifices and Minor Sacrifices and the most representative rituals mentioned above, the dissertation demonstrates the features of the Propitious Rituals in the Tang and Song Dynasties when the state rituals experienced tremendous changes.
