Abstract: In this thesis, we first propose an improvedmaximum-likelihood (ML) channel estimator for orthogonalfrequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, which systematicallycombines the ML estimation with a frequency-domain smoothingtechnique. We next propose an efficient channel estimation and phaseerror suppression technique for multi-band OFDM-based ultra-wideband(UWB) communications. Analytical and numerical results show that theproposed scheme is of high performance and robust even under highlynoisy multipath channel conditions. Finally, we devote our effort toML approaches for uplink carrier frequency offset estimation in bothsingle-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) systemswith generalized carrier-assignment scheme. We propose a newapproach, called as divide-and-update frequency estimator (DUFE),which outperforms the existing solutions in the sense that the DUFEhas the lowest computational complexity while maintaining the highestimation accuracy property of ML solutions.
