Abstract: Hydroformylation reaction faces problem in separation of the precious catalytic metal from the liquid products. In this study, several novel heterogeneous catalytic systems have been designed and tested in styrene hydroformylation reactions. A series of functionalized nanostructure supports, have been used to tether RhCl(PPh3)3 or HRh(CO)(PPh3)3 to produce heterogenized rhodium catalysts to catalyze styrene hydroformylation reactions. The external silanols of SBA-15 and MCM-41 were passivated prior to grafting PAMAM dendrimers. The passivation of the external silanols outside the mesopores of SBA-15 or MCM-41 helps to tether rhodium complexes mainly inside the dendritic mesopore channels of SBA-15 or MCM-41. The results showed that the passivated SBA-15 and MCM-41 dendritic catalysts exhibited better catalytic performance and higher stability over non-passivated counterparts. Nano-alumina supported PAMAM catalysts also showed much better catalytic performances than conventional alumina supported analogs. All these results show that dendrimer helps to increase the activity, selectivity and stability of supported rhodium complex catalyst for styrene hydroformylation. Complete characterizations of the catalytic systems have been conducted by BET, FTIR, ICP, TEM, FE-SEM, TGA, XPS, and XRD etc.
