Abstract: The adsorption of benzene, naphthalene, tetracene, and pentacene on Si(111)-7x7 were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. During the benzene adsorption process, significant benzene chemisorption and desorption events occur at adjacent adatom sites. It is proposed that the approach of a benzene could cause the desorption of a neighboring benzene due to a substrate-mediated charge transfer. The binding configurations of naphthalene, tetracene, and pentacene on Si(111)-7x7 were elucidated based on the STM data. The complexities of the results increase from naphthalene to pentacene due to the size increment of the adsorbates that provide various binding possibilities with the substrate. DFT theoretical studies were performed to model the various configurations and to calculate their adsorption energies. The factors affecting the relative thermodynamic stabilities of the different configurations as calculated and their relative populations as observed experimentally were discussed.
