Abstract: The adsorption and reactions of methyl chloroformate (CH3OC(O)Cl) and its derivatives, namely methoxycarbonylsulphenyl chloride (CH3OC(O)SCl), methyl chlorothiolformate (CH3SC(O)Cl) and methyl oxalyl chloride (CH3OC(O)C(O)Cl) on clean and oxygen-precovered Ni(111) have been investigated using Reflection Adsorption Infrared Spectroscopy (RAIRS). The substitution of the CH3O or Cl groups of CH3OC(O)Cl leads to different reaction pathways of the compounds. On clean Ni(111), both associative and dissociative adsorption are observed at low temperatures to give n1(O) or n1(C)-species that decompose upon temperature increase. In contrast, the susceptibility of the electron-deficient carbonyl carbon in the compounds to the nucleophilic attack of preadsorbed oxygen results in the formation of carboxylate species on oxygena??precovered Ni(111).
