Abstract: The investigation of the flow field around a two-dimensional pure sinusoidally heaving wing at zero angle of attack , using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has been performed in a low speed re-circulating water-channel. The Reynolds number was maintained at a constant value of 1000, whilst the reduced frequency and the non-dimensional amplitude of the wing motion. Results of this experiment allowed to classify the wakes within the parametric plane (h, Stc) regarding their propulsive characteristics. This map shows that the Sta plays a significant role in the characterization of the wake dynamics. However, the detailed analysis of the wake evolution through the examination of the vorticity contour plots shows that this parameter cannot be the sole parameter governing the overall problem, and that both the heaving amplitude and frequency have an impact on the vortical wake structures, and thus on the forces generated.
