Abstract: This research was aimed at the application of FRP systems in the strengthening of openings in RC slabs. In the study, the concept of strong bands, as indicting a zone for strengthening, was derived first for both one-way and two-way slabs using parametric studies. Thereafter, the required FRP reinforcement was derived for small and large openings respectively, based on the magnified moment and the capacity based approach using principles of virtual work. Experimental studies on one-way slabs, two-way slabs, and flat plates were conducted thenceforward to validate the proposed theory. Good agreement between test and analytical results was achieved. Finally, design guidelines and recommendations were summarized based on the proposed theory and test results for the use of practical design.
