Abstract: This study examines competitive responses in Indian companies following economic liberalization in India in October 1991. It is found that Indian Companies emphasize Efficiency as a response to foreign competition. In addition, the impact of complexity and dynamism in the industry on firm efficiency and innovation were explored.Consumer Non-Durable and Industrial Products industries were found to improve efficiency as a response to Foreign Presence, and this was directly associated with the extent of foreign penetration in these two industries. By comparison Consumer Durable industries dealt with foreign competition through political lobbying rather than efficiency improvements.
