Abstract: With the tremendous expansion in the use of herbal medicines worldwide, assurance of their quality, safety and efficacy have become an important concern for both health authorities and the public. Quality control of the raw herbs is also very important to ensure the quality of their final products. In this work, an HPLC-DAD method was developed using four bioactive constituents as markers for indication of the authenticity of Rhizoma Gastrodiae, and a SPE HPLC method was developed for determination of the major constituent, gastrodin, of Chinese Proprietary Medicines (CPMs) containing Rhizoma Gastrodiae. HPLC chromatographic fingerprinting of thirty-four Chinese herbs was investigated. Herbal samples were successfully grouped by cluster analysis. HPLC-DAD and LC-MS methods were also developed for the differentiation of Radix Stephaniae tetrandrae and Radix Aristolochiae fangchi. Aristolochic acid, a nephrotoxic component of Radix Aristolochiae fangchi, was found present in the local herbal samples claimed as Radix Stephaniae tetrandrae.
