Abstract: Mixed nitrocellulose membrane ultrafilters, impregnated with lipid-like substances can be used as a model of biomembranes because they exhibit ion-selectivity and electrophysical properties that closely resemble that of biomembranes.It was found that an extra semi-circle was observed in the Cole-Cole plot during measurements of impedance in some cases. Time dependence of the transmembrane potential and resistance of the biomimetic membranes in the presence of nonionic surfactants was investigated. Transmembrane potential decreases after addition of surfactant and then gradually returns back to almost the initial value. Effect of type and concentration of surfactant, type of filter and impregnating liquid, pore size, pH, and thickness on this phenomenon was studied. Oscillations induced by the addition of nonionic surfactants were also observed. At very high concentrations, surfactants induced a??membrane lysisa?? The phenomena were explained by interactions of the surfactants with the biomimetic membrane. Initially the membrane surface was modified which resulted in transmembrane potential changes. After that the surfactant penetrate through the membrane, resulting in irreversible structural changes, inducing oscillations and even membrane lysis.
