Abstract: The synthesis and reactivity of ruthenium complexes of indene and its derivatives such as bis-indenylmethane and phenylindene have been explored. The attempted synthesis of a fluorenylruthenium complex led to the fortuitous discovery of a highly efficient catalytic reductive homocoupling of 9-bromofluorene to bifluorenyl in the presence of 0.01 mol% Ru3(CO)12. FeCl3 was also found to show excellent activity in the homocoupling of 9-bromofluorene to bifluorenyl. The hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes was efficiently catalyzed by [Cp*IrCl2]2 to afford selectively the I?-(Z)-vinylsilanes in excellent yields and the catalytic cycle was studied with a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques. [Cp*IrCl2]2 was also found to react with a number of terminal alkynes in the presence of water via Ca?!C bond cleavage to form [Cp*Ir(CO)Cl(CH2R)]; with functionalized alkynes, different products were obtained. The reaction pathways for the formation of some of these products were also investigated.
