dc.description.abstract | A study on the higher fungi in the Lim Chu Kang mangrove swamp in Singapore was conducted to investigate the effects of pre-inoculation of wood substrata with known fungi on subsequent colonization by other fungi in situ.It was noted in the study that pre-inoculation of Rhizophora apiculata, Sonneratia caseolaris and balsa wood with Verruculina enalia adversely affected the subsequent colonization of other fungi in situ. Even though the pre-inoculation of mangrove wood with Aniptodera chesapeakensis and Lignicola laevis also adversely affected subsequent colonization of other fungi, the effects were not as pronounced as that of V. enalia. From this study, it was concluded that the presence of pre-inoculated fungal species interacted with the native fungi colonizing the substrata. In the case of V. enalia, interference competition probably occurred, thus adversely affected the colonization of other fungi. | |
