dc.description.abstract | Since acquiring World Heritage status in 1997, Lijiang Ancient Town has annuallyattracted millions of tourists. This thesis engages a neo-Gramscian approach to explorethe politics of heritage tourism in Lijiang. Using the concepts of hegemony, dominanceand resistance, the thesis examines the dialectics between global and domestic capital, the Chinese state, tourists and locals as they collaborate and contest one another in astruggle for capital accumulation without forgoing identity and conservation of its richheritage. With the opening of China, the state and private enterprise havecommercialised Lijiang in the name of development and growth for this peripheralregion. While this hegemonic discourse is pervasive, consent is incomplete. Strategiesof resistance from native Naxi will be examined to document how spaces are reclaimedfrom commodification. In addition, strategies will be suggested for sustained tourisminterest in the location. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are employed in thisresearch. | |
