Abstract: The contemporary product design-to-manufacturing process involves a group of knowledge-intensive applications and functions. The development of adequate integration infrastructures for them to construct network-integrated engineering environments is strongly desirable but currently suffers from methodological deficiencies in many aspects. This thesis presents an effort to develop a network-integrated engineering environment with emphasis on the pursuit of a formulated system integration approach to overcome many of the deficiencies. The proposed approach can be used for a broad range of processes, collectively called feature-driven engineering processes. It is centered on the concept of a CAX framework which is adapted from the CAD framework, a notion originally used in the area of EDA (Electronic Design Automation). The complicated system integration problem is resolved with the introduction of an adequate CAX framework with some necessary add-on wrappers to make the CAX tools compatible with the framework. The main steps involved to develop the framework are presented in the context of developing a prototype CAD/CAM system for progressive die design and manufacturing. The advantages of the developed system include the support of design change propagation management, process management, etc. The results can provide a basis for system developers to adaptively use this approach in other relevant areas.
