Abstract: This thesis reports the development of Ni-based catalysts, Pd/Al2O3 hollow fiber composite membrane and Pd membrane reactors for hydrogen production from ethanol. Surface oxygen mobility of supports has been found to play important roles in influencing the catalytic performance of Ni-based catalyst over partial oxidation and reforming of ethanol. A method of preparing Al2O3 hollow fiber membrane with smooth surface and high mechanical strength has also been described. Ultra thin Pd membrane can be prepared by electroless plating on the base Al2O3 hollow fiber without any modification process and this Pd membrane exhibits high hydrogen permeance and selectivity. Moreover, membrane reactors based on the Pd/Al2O3 hollow fiber composite membranes have been investigated. Pure hydrogen can be produced from ethanol in one step with these membrane reactors. Ethanol conversion and H2 selectivity achieved with Pd membrane reactor are found higher than those with conventional reactor.
