Abstract: Shadows (???) consist of silhouettes, shadowed-repetitions against the light and lateral doubles in mirrored reflections. Through the coinage of a new literary term, Shadow-textualityi???????????i??, this dissertation attempts to re-interpret a??Dream of the Red Chambera?? i????Sc???Y???|???i??as an intertext which embraces the Chinese philosophical aesthetic ideologies of complementary bipolarity, and one that has a mise en abyme effect. It is argued that shadow-textuality contributes to the maturity of the literati novel genre, as the author uses it to allegorise his nostalgia and self-confession. In the shadow-intertexuality between the text and the lyrical, allegoric, romance and historical traditions, lyrical tradition is seen as the most significant genre shadow-intertexual relation. In the shadow-intratexuality of the novel, besides being a psychological allegory of the authora??s ironic confessional self (in relation to characters, perspectives and related images), shadow-textuality is used to rationalise the complex structures of the novel, in the making of its thematic significance.
