Abstract: Network coding is regarded as a promising technique for wireless packet switched networks to improve the network capacity and throughput. An opportunistic network coding scheme is studied in this thesis. We implement this scheme by enhancing the popular network simulator QualNet, and then use it to evaluate the scheme?s performance through simulations on several wireless network topologies. Based on the performance results obtained, an improved (i.e. intelligent) version opportunistic network coding scheme for wireless mobile ad-hoc networks is proposed, and its effectiveness evaluated through further simulations. This intelligent scheme addresses some information exchange issues which cause significant overhead and data congestion problems at multi-hop scenario that we observed previously. Our simulation results show this intelligent scheme could improve the network throughput by nearly 3 to 4 folds with selected network topologies and traffic patterns in multi-hop settings.
