Abstract: This thesis examines the self-expression in vignettes (xiaopin) of Ming-Qing transition time. Mainly focusing on Dong Yue, and discussing Zhang Dai as his comparison, it shows that there were at least two modes of self-expression in this writings. As representative of the traditional mode, the world created in Zhang Dai¿s Tao¿an mengyi is based on remembrance and the author¿s self is defined in terms of his relationship to late-Ming era, family, and literati societies. Dong¿s ¿county of dreams¿ opens up a new world of self-expression by using dream as its subject matter. Through this world, isolated from the sufferings in real life and separated from family and country, Dong defines his self more related with his mental state than with the external world. ¿County of dreams¿ has its significance for self-expression in Chinese literature history: it¿s the first complex imaginary world based on one¿s dream to present the author¿s self.
