dc.description.abstract | Coordination polymers (or metal-organic frameworks) are rapidly emerging inorganic¿organic solid state materials and have drawn ever-increasing scientific and technological interest due to their widespread application such as gas storage/separation, catalysis, ion exchange, drug delivery and optoelectronics etc. In this thesis a series of Pb(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) coordination polymers with bpe (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene), monocarboxylates and nitrate anions have been synthesized and well characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic methods and analytical techniques. The olefinic bonds of bpe were successfully oriented in several coordination polymers to direct solid-state synthesis of rctt-tetrapyridylcyclobutane (rtctt-tpcb) by photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. Hydrogen bonded complexes were also employed to study the photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reaction in the solid state. This study provides new insights into the solid-state reactivity and molecular movements in the crystal lattice. A novel isomerization of rtctt-tpcb has been accomplished to synthesize tetrahedrally disposed pyridyl ligand, rtct-tpcb isomer exclusively which in turn, has been used to construct two MOFs having interesting topologies. | |
