Abstract: In this thesis, two main objectives are addressed: understanding knowledge integration in inter-organizational IS projects and eliciting the influence of social capital on knowledge integration in inter-organizational IS projects. The objectives were addressed through an interpretive study of three Singapore based inter-organizational IS projects. The thesis finds that inter-organizational knowledge integration in IS projects occurs through knowledge clusters; groups representing the various knowledge bases required for the project. The thesis develops a knowledge integration and social capital framework that comprehensively provides an understanding of knowledge clusters, knowledge integration processes and the influence of social capital on the phenomenon. In doing so the thesis provides a first step towards developing a theory of inter-organizational knowledge integration and informs practitioners on a knowledge cluster based strategy to manage inter-organizational IS projects and leveraging a naturally occurring resource such as social capital for the benefit of the project.
