Removal of environmental estrogens by granular activated carbon adsorption. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | ABSTRACTName: Maung Tint LwinDegree: M.EnggDept: Civil Engineering DepartmentThesis Title: Removal of environmental estrogens by granular activated carbon adsorptionOver the last few years, there are sound evidences of adverse effect on human and wild life by estrogenic compounds. In fact, effluent from sewage treatment plant (STP) is the primary source of estrogenic compounds, which widely spread into aqueous environment. Increased concern of estrogenic compounds from sewage effluent has demanded to remove the estrogenic compounds from STP effluent before discharge into waterway.Since the granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption is one the best available technologies in current time for removal of micropollutants from water and wastewater, feasibility of GAC adsorption for removal of estrogenic compounds from STP effluent has been investigated in this research work. Competitive effect of dissolved organic matters (DOMs) from STP effluent on GAC adsorption was also investigated to understand the competitive mechanism. Then STP effluent was pretreated with iron oxide coated sand (IOCS) to decrease the competitiveness of DOMs, and improvement in adsorption efficiency by IOCS pretreatment was examined. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/17570 |
