Abstract: Theoretically, issues of differential and discriminatory policing often revolve around the narrowly defined ¿race and crime¿ debate which is focused on whether certain ethnic minorities are over-represented in the prison population because of elevated rates of offending or because of discriminatory treatment in the criminal justice system. This study moves beyond that long-standing debate and focuses instead on developing a minority perspective on race, crime and policing in Singapore in an attempt to document how ethnic minorities articulate their experiences of and responses to policing practices and explaining how and why racialized responses and expectations has come to enter into police-minority encounters and sit in the consciousness of ethnic minorities. Contextualizing these responses, this study examines the influence of the workings of the racial State and State¿s racialization on how stop-and-search practices and the use of racialized discretion are being carried out by the
