dc.description.abstract | The application of microwaves in drying and melt granulation was investigated with prior evaluation of the starting material dielectric properties. Microwave-assisted drying of lactose-based granules comprising acetylsalicylic acid was performed in a single-pot processor. Drying performance of granules was dependent on the microwave-induced heating capabilities and movement of entrapped water molecules. As opposed to conventional drying, larger granules of higher porosities and moisture contents exhibited higher drying rates under microwave-assisted conditions. Drug stability was unaffected by microwaves. In microwave-induced melt granulation performed using a similar equipment, the heating of microwave-irradiated lactose-anhydrous dicalcium phosphate admixtures were less efficient than when conventional heat was applied. This affected agglomerate growth, binder and moisture contents of resultant granules and rendered product temperature less applicable than mixer power consumption for process monitoring. Granule compressibility was dominated by their binder and moisture contents with further contributions from granule size, porosity and flow to their compaction behavior. | |
