Abstract: In this project, nanocrystalline Fe3O4 particles, nanocrystalline Fe3O4 in Nafion membrane, nanocrystalline nickel ferrite and zinc ferrites in silica, were successfully synthesized via emulsion, ion-exchange, mechanical activation and sol-gel routes. These nanocrystalline ferrite phases and their nanocomposites were each investigated systematically for their phase formations, nanostructural features and magnetic properties, as well as the inter-relationships among them. Several new and unique phenomena, pertaining to the phase formations, cation distributions in the spinal structure of ferrites, cluster glass structure and the resulting magnetic behaviors of nanocrystalline ferrites and nanocompsites, were discovered and studied in this project. These new phenomena have been made understood by establishing the inter-relationships among the synthesis parameters, resulting nanostructural features and magnetic properties for these nanocrystalline and nanocomposite-type materials.
