Abstract: Co-Al-O granular thin films were prepared on glass substrates by co-sputtering Al2O3 at 200 W RF power with varying DC Co power to attain different film composition. The films were characterized by carrying out magnetoresistance (MR), vibrating sample magnetometer, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The key transport mechanism in granular films is governed by the interplay of spin-dependent tunneling and Coulomb Blockade. Hence in order to observe Coulomb Blockade, nano-devices such as nano-bridges and granular-in-gap (GIG) devices with restricted tunneling paths are designed and fabricated. Granular-in-gap (GIG) devices were fabricated using both photolithography and electron beam lithography. Temperature dependence of resistivity, coercivity and MR ratio were investigated for GIG devices.
