Abstract: AbstractSeveral dicopper(II) complexes of reduced Schiff base ligands derived from various 5-substitued salicylaldehydes and natural/unnatural amino acids have been investigated as functional models for the catecholase activity by employing 3,5-DTBC as a model substrate. Investigations on effect of substituents in the phenyl ring on the activity revealed that the electron withdrawing substituents decreased the activity while electron donating substituents increased the activity. The influence of weakly coordinating sulfonate group on the structures and catecholase activity has also been investigated. The additional reactive groups on the amino acid side arm in the reduced Schiff base ligand, have furnished several 1D coordination polymeric Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes. Interestingly, a Ni(II) complex, derived from N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-L-glutamic acid (H3Sglu) has a novel helical staircase coordination polymeric structure encapsulating 1D helical water chain in the chiral helical channels.Keywords: reduced Schiff base ligands, copper(II), nickel(II), catecholase activity, biomimetic studies, coordination polymers, 1D helical water, helical staircase polymers, crystal structures, magnetic properties.
