dc.description.abstract | This longitudinal study investigated stress patterns and moderating factors of stress of dental undergraduates (n=134), and the relationships of saliva biomarkers with stress. Questionnaires were used to measure stress and moderating factors. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine salivary cortisol, immunoglobulin A (IgA) and lysozyme. The questionnaire response rates and valid subjects for saliva analyses were: 100%, 82.1% (beginning); 99.3%, 71.6% (middle) and 98.5%, 79.1% (end) during the academic year. Academic work was the prime stressor for students throughout the year. Students perceived high levels of stress especially at the middle of academic year. Most of them had Type A behaviour. They usually adopted problem-focused coping, and sought support from family members/friends and course-mates. There was a positive relationship between self-perceived stress level with salivary cortisol and inverse relationships with salivary IgA and lysozyme. The findings support the hypothesis that stress activates the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis and suppresses immunity. | |
