Abstract: This thesis attempts to reconstruct the politics of language in the Philippines during the American period (1898-1935). It describes the discourse of the American English-language policy (as official language and as the sole language of the medium of instruction) and explains the determined and persistent defense of the policy. The thesis also describes the Filipino discourse on the importance of local languages, and of Tagalog in particular, in the formation of a modern Philippine nation.
