dc.description.abstract | The scattering coefficients of the circular waveguide step discontinuity are solved numerically using the Least-Square Boundary Residual Method (LSBRM) and Modal Matching Method. A Fourier summation with unknown coefficients is developed to represent the transverse fields in the immediate vicinity of the step discontinuity. A computer model is written to solve the complex relations. Both methods are subjected to various validation tests. The numerical results obtained from the computer model for both methods are found to be convergent as the number of modes used in the Fourier summation increased. Excellent field matching is observed at the step discontinuity. The effects of varying the ratio of the radius of the waveguide, ratio of the number of reflected and transmitted waves at the waveguide step discontinuity and the weights of the various field expressions are investigated. Unlike LSBRM, Modal Matching Method exhibits difficulties in exciting an infinite number of modes, especially in a smaller waveguide, when results from the convergence and field matching tests are less satisfactory with high mode ratios and a significantly large number of modes. | |
