Abstract: This thesis focused on increasing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (K<sub>u</sub>) of CoCrPt based magnetic recording media to increase the magnetic recording areal density. A large K<sub>u</sub> value to ~9 x 10<sup>6</sup> erg/cc was achieved in the Co<sub>72</sub>Pt<sub>28</sub> film deposited on smooth Ta seedlayer surface. This K<sub>u</sub> value allowed thermally stable grain size down to 4.5 nm diameter and to be able to support the areal density of 1 Tbits/in<sup>2</sup>. A layer engineering approach was adopted to control the microstructure of recording layer to achieve large signal-to-noise ratio (<i>SNR</i>). It was observed that a dual-layer structure of Ru underlayer was effective in reducing the intergranular exchange interaction and grain size, and induced favorable environment for large <i>SNR</i>. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy analysis indicated that a large K<sub>u</sub> for Co<sub>72</sub>Pt<sub>28</sub> film could be attributed to the improved <i>hcp</i> stacking.
