dc.description.abstract | In Mao's discourse, "going to the people," is largely replaced by serving the workers, peasants and soldiers, which leads the sublimation in literary practice. Tang Shi was one of the modernist poets in the 1940s; however, he made significant changes when he restarted writing in the 1950s. My thesis mainly discusses Tang's escape from Maoist sublime and his aesthetic perception of the folk, which adds particular values to his poetry from the 1950s to 1970s. First, Tang turned his attention to the folk with romanticism by reinterpreting folksongs and folktales, and in this way he reinterpreted the primitiveness of the folk. Secondly, Tang's romantic writing is an alternative response to the politicalized lyrics of Mao's day. He rebuilt his self-identity from a "Narcissus" to a "traveler" in his writing of the countryside. His application of modernism in a romantic writing is a good example of peaceful co-existence in poetics. | |
