dc.description.abstract | Chinese and Asian Indians show significant differences in the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and insulin resistance. Thiazolidinediones act to improve the insulin sensitivity in T2DM. The main objective of this study was to assess the effect of Rosiglitazone on the insulin sensitivity of Asian T2DM patients of two different ethnic groups, Chinese and Indians.Eighteen Asian T2DM patients participated in the study. All subjects underwent a euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp before and after completion of 16-week Rosiglitazone treatment. The anthropometric and metabolic variables, adiponectin in its different molecular weight forms and other biochemical changes, including dynamic changes in IGFBP-1 were measured. Our study showed that there was a significant ethnic difference in insulin sensitivity in response to Rosiglitazone in Asian Indian T2DM patients compared to Chinese. Indians had greater improvement in insulin sensitivity despite greater increase in total body weight and percent body fat and waist circumference. | |
