Abstract: This thesis aims to address some of the unresolved issues relating to the characteristics of vortex rings. The study is divided into three parts, namely, 1. circular vortex rings, 2. elliptic vortex rings, and 3. interaction of a vortex ring with a circular cylinder. In the case of a circular vortex ring, the relationship between the generating conditions and characteristics of the vortex ring are discussed. This includes the measurement of vorticity profile within the core of the vortex ring. For elliptic vortex rings, the trajectories of the vortex rings and the associated flow fields obtained using DPIV technique are presented. The issue on the existence of vortex stretching during the oscillatory motion of elliptic vortex ring is also examined. For the case of vortex ring/circular cylinder interaction, investigations were conducted with vortex cores and cylinders of various sizes, and the results are analysed with reference to the cut-and-reconnection mechanism.
