dc.description.abstract | The rapid economic growth of Singapore and shortage of land make it necessary to reclaim land from the sea. The present study investigates the use of lumpy soils generated from dredging, excavation and tunneling works as an alternative reclamation fill. This thesis aims to achieve a better understanding on the consolidation and compressibility behaviour of lumpy clay fill mainly by laboratory experiments.Firstly a study on softening behaviour of single cubical lump was carried out. It was found that the rate of softening is slower for larger lumps and the final water content of lumps after fully softening is close to its liquid limit. In addition, a numerical solution to evaluate the softening degree of single cubical lumps was proposed. This provides a sound basis for determining the degree of softening of a lumpy fill with time and lump size.A series of large one-dimensional consolidation tests on lumpy fills were performed to evaluate the effects of softening degree, lump size, permeability of inter-lump voids and initial inter-lump void ratio. To evaluate the softening effects, three lumpy fills with softening degrees of 0%, 50% and 100% respectively were tested. It was found that the higher the degree of softening, the lower is compressibility of lumpy fill because there are less inter-lump voids in a fully softened fill than in a non-fully softened lumpy fill.Experiments to evaluate effects of lump size were carried out on lumpy fills with different lump sizes (from 10mm to 50mm) but same initial inter-lump void ratio (eiv). Here eiv is the ratio of volume of inter-lump voids over volume of lumps. It was found that lumpy fill with higher eiv would start with a higher void ratio e in the e-log i??va?? curve and eventually merges with the other curves for lumpy fills with lower eiv. Lumpy fills with water and slurry of consistency 151%, 292% and 603% in the inter-lump voids were tested. It was found that the permeability of materials in the inter-lump voids governs the rate of consolidation and the permeability of the lumpy fill system under low surcharge pressures. In addition, it is noted that the variation of the permeability of materials filling the inter-lump voids has little effect on the compressibility behaviour of lumpy fills.Lastly two-dimensional finite element analysis was performed using ABAQUS 6.21 computer program to further examine the consolidation behaviour of lumpy fills. The numerical predictions matched fairly well with the experimental results. | |
