Abstract: Human perinantal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in Singapore was investigated. In addition, the behaviors of these xenobiotics from mothers to fetus/infants were explored using the multivariate data analyses (MVAs) techniques. Food types consumed were the most prominent predictors for the levels of pollutants in maternal tissue. Transplacental transfer (TPT) behaviors of POPs were linked to the physico-chemical properties of the compounds. The occurrence of some organochlorine pollutants in cord blood was correlated with some poor birth outcomes in the study, and the risk assessment indicated that some breastfed babies in Singapore may have the daily intake of pollutants close to, or above, the threshold for adverse effects. The study has advanced our scientific understanding on the vertical transmission of POPs between mother and fetus, and has highlighted specific needs for further epidemiological studies.
