Abstract: The reaction of the heteronuclear cluster RuOs3(I?-H)2(CO)13, 1, with a number of ditertiary phosphines have been found to afford a complex mixture of products. A high-yielding synthetic route to the dppm derivative RuOs3(I?-H)2(CO)9(I?-CO)2(I?-dppm), 4a, has also been developed. The reaction of 4a with a series of internal and terminal alkynes afforded RuOs3(I?-H)(CO)8(I?-CO)(I?3,I?2:I?1-PhPCH2PPh2)(I?3,I?1:I?2:I?1-L) (L = alkyne), 21. Cyclotrimerization of phenylacetylene was observed. The reaction of 1 with saturated and unsaturated five membered carbocylic rings led to C-H activation to afford the clusters RuOs3(I?-H)(CO)9(I?-CO)2(I?5-L) (L = C5 ring), 32. The reactivity of 1 with arenes and bicyclic aromatic ligands has also been explored. There appears to be a tendency for ligand coordination, followed by cluster fragmentation and condensation, resulting in the formation of trigonal bipyramidal clusters.
