dc.description.abstract | Product family design is restricted by the availability of information. Design reuse is a promising approach to alleviate the difficulty. However, current design reuse practices have been inadequate to provide a complete design process model. A new design reuse methodology was proposed in this research to support product family design. Based on the proposed methodology, a comprehensive process model was developed to accommodate major issues of product family design, including the modeling of product information, information processing, and design synthesis to generate product configurations. The product architecture was built with the support of neural networks and the product performances were evaluated using a new method based on theory of axiomatic design. The product configurations can be generated using automated design synthesis and optimization processes. It was shown in the thesis that the proposed design reuse methodology can achieve more efficient product family design with enhanced product quality and reduced cost. | |
