Abstract: In this work, a series of cyclodextrin based ionic compounds were successfully synthesized, characterized and investigated for their suitability in chiral selective applications. Applications of interest include the control of asymmetric synthesis reactions as a reaction additive and also chiral separations in gas chromatography and capillary electrophoresis.This research focuses on the investigation on the possibility of various applications using permethylated cyclodextrin-based ionic salts with imidazolium or pyridinium group as the cationic centre. The results are then compared with cyclodextrin or other cyclodextrin derivatives that are successfully applied in the similar field. From the results, it was deduced that the compounds synthesized here do not perform as well as other derivatives in the applications under the scope. However, this provides a better understanding to the relation of the various functional groups on the cyclodextrin derivatives to their chiral selective effects.
