dc.description.abstract | A major part of previous comparative studies believed that Confucianism is incompatible with Platonic philosophy. However, in the process of my research on the two philosophers, I find that there exist a number of similarities between the philosophies of Plato and Confucius that are apparent in their representative works, the Republic and the Analects. As far as these two books are concerned, Plato and Confucius actually employ the same methods to realize a just society. And these similarities are meaningful because they reveal a fact that Western and Eastern politics may be more compatible than they look. In this essay I argue that Plato and Confucius both believe that an efficiently-run hierarchically-ordered society is the best way to realize justice, in spite of their different accounts of justice. In terms of methodology, there are four similarities between Platoa??s and Confuciusa?? efforts to create a just society. | |
