Abstract: In today's knowledge-intensive engineering environment, information management is an important and essential activity. With an explosive growth of textual information created and stored digitally, there has been an increasing demand to reduce the time in acquiring useful information from massive amount of textual data. Automatic text summarization technology has proven to be helpful in integrating the information from multiple documents and facilitating the process of information searching and management. Therefore, this thesis examines the challenging issues of automatically summarizing multiple technical papers within engineering domain.Existing text summarization researches mainly focus on the domain of news articles. Compared to news articles, summarization of technical papers is different in terms of readers' information requirements and document genre. Therefore, existing multi-document summarization methods may not perform well for the domain of technical papers. This thesis analyzes the special characteristics of the technical paper domain and proposes a multi-paper summarization framework based on the textual structures of technical papers. Specifically, the textual structures include macrostructure and microstructure. Macrostructure consists of the significant topics shared among different papers, while microstructure consists of the elaborating and complementary information for those topics.
