Abstract: The selective oxidation of benzene to phenol was studied over Iron and Vanadium based catalysts. Iron was incorporated into the matrix of zeolite beta by hydrothermal synthesis and impregnated on to other supports such as alumina and zirconium hydroxide. Only with iron incorporated zeolite beta catalysts a high conversion of benzene to phenol (12%) was achieved, at a substrate catalyst ratio of 100:1 and with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. A maximum selectivity of 100% was observed. Likewise, Vanadium was incorporated into the matrix of zeolite beta resulting in a conversion of 6.8% with molecular oxygen as the oxidant and ascorbic acid as the co-reductant. With the Vanadium incorporated MCM-41 catalysts, a conversion of 6% was obtained. Both the type of vanadium based catalysts gave 100% selectivity. All the catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption and SEM. Iron based homogeneous catalysis, with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant, was also carried out achieving a conversion of 18% and 88% selectivity. The decrease in selectivity was due to the formation of over-oxidized products of phenol.
