Abstract: By utilizing a unique sequence (81B) of E.coli-Shigella genus and PCR in situ hybridization technique, it is found that cancer cells are not only frequently surrounded by them but also harbored an abundance of such gene sequences in the cells and within the nuclei. We also found gene sequences coding for HRA1 (heat resistant agglutinating 1) and CNF1 (cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1) existed in great abundance and frequency in cancer cells and nucleus, relative to normal cells (seldom in nucleus). Bacteria possessing the HRA1 and CNF1 gene determinants have been shown to be able to mediate attachment to cells derived from intestinal epithelium such as the human colonic adenocarcinoma and to affect cellular changes involved with cell shape, motility and apoptosis respectively. All this suggest an association of E.coli bacteria with colorectal cancer and that tumor cells can harbor E.coli bacteria that are not just adherent but can also secret a protein that can cause cell transformation. This finding can leads to discovery of potential markers for early detection or intervention of colorectal cancer.
