Abstract: Commercially important polymers such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol-A) (phenoxy) were grafted onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using a reactive blending method. Polymers containing reactive groups such as maleic anhydride and epoxy ring were melt blended with suitable functionalized MWNTs. The mechanical properties of PE, PP, poly(1-butene) and poly(ethylene oxide) reinforced by appropriate polymer-grafted MWNTs were studied. In all cases, the stiffness, strength, ductility and toughness of the polymer were improved significantly. In contrast, the incorporation of pristine MWNTs only improved the stiffness and strength marginally, but reduced the ductility and toughness significantly. The grafting of polymers onto MWNTs enabled the nanotubes to be dispersed homogeneously in the polymer matrices and improved polymer-nanotubes interfacial adhesion.
