Abstract: In uplink transmission, OFDMA suffers from Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) caused by subcarrier frequency misalignment, which can be due to Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) and Doppler effects. In particular, different users have independent frequency misalignment and thus CFO compensation used in single-user OFDM fails to suppress the ICI in an OFDMA system. In this dissertation, we investigate the use of multiuser detection schemes to suppress ICI at the receiver after transmission through time and frequency selective channels. Specifically, both linear and non-linear algorithms have been studied and compared for general OFDMA uplink transmission. In addition, since channel information is requisite to the ICI suppression, estimation of the doubly selective channel is also investigated. Performance analyses are given to evaluate the proposed ICI suppression and channel estimation schemes. Analytical and simulation results are presented to show the performance improvement that can be obtained by using the proposed schemes.
