Abstract: Enhanced biological phosphorous removal (EBPR) processes are widely used to remove soluble orthophosphate in domestic wastewater. This dissertation examines the ecological function, interaction, and diversity of different microbial populations (e.g., polyphosphate accumulating organisms and glycogen accumulating orgnaims) involve in EBPR process using laboratory-scale anaerobic-aerobic sequencing membrane bioreactors to mimic the EBPR process. Culture-independent methods combined with microautoradiography, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and polyhydroxyalkanoate staining was applied to elucidate their ecophysiology and the data compared with those from previous studies. Samples from full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were also collected to verify the roles of those important bacterial groups previously found in the EBPR process. Overall results reveled that the application of culture-independent molecular methods to analyze EBPR community structure has changed dramatically the understanding of the microbial populations responsible for EBPR, but many substantial gaps in the knowledge of the population dynamics of EBPR and its underlying mechanisms remain.
