Abstract: This thesis reports the fabrication, characterization and properties of polymeric materials based on double-C60-end-capped polymers or polymer-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Double-C60-end-capped poly(ethylene oxide) (FPEOF), double-C60-end-capped poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (FPBMAF), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-grafted MWNTs were synthesized and characterized. Pseudo-semi-interpenetrating polymer networks containing FPEOF or FPBMA possessed good mechanical and optical properties. Composites of PMMA-grafted MWNTs and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) or poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were fabricated. The miscibility between PMMA and SAN or PVDF enabled the carbon nanotubes to be homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrixes and also improved polymer-nanotube interfacial adhesion. The thermal properties, morphology and mechanical properties of the polymer/MWNTs composites were studied. The present study showed that both the strength and the toughness of the polymer matrix can be improved by the incorporation of small amounts of double-C60-end-capped polymers or polymer-grafted carbon nanotubes.
