Abstract: Opposing jets create high rates of heat and mass transport in the impingement zone and its vicinity due to head-on jet-to-jet impingement and thus have found a wide range of industrial applications, i.e. in combustion, drying, mixing, reaction injection molding, biomedical devices etc.In this research, the flow and mixing characteristics of two-dimensional confined laminar opposing jets are studied numerically as the first step to develop a novel in-line mixer with no moving parts or internal elements. Five low-Reynolds-number k-I? models are evaluated for the impinging jet configuration and the Change-Hsieh-Chen (CHC) model is selected to investigate the performance of an in-line mixer with three-dimensional confined turbulent slot opposing jets. This project also examines the flow and mixing characteristics of three-dimensional confined turbulent round opposing jet configuration using the standard k-I? turbulence model. The effects of thermo-fluid properties, jet Reynolds number, dome height, multiple opposing jets, multi-set opposing jets with/without offset, opposing jet injection angle and inlet jet nozzle geometry on mixing were explored. Finally, an experimental study of the mixing characteristics of three-dimensional confined turbulent opposing jets was carried out. Results of this study are presented and discussed.
