Abstract: This thesis examines the environmental and livelihood security issues confronting the Malay-Muslim small-scale fishers of southern Thailand. A wide range of social, economic and political factors influence the interrelationships between the local community and their immediate environment. Cultural heritages, government policies, social capital and linkages to networks shape humana??environment interactions. Besides these, the growing economic openness of developing countries, rapidly changing geopolitical situations and the increasing pace of global environmental change have all influenced how the environment is used. a??Freaka?? and sudden events such as the Asian financial crisis, Avian flu and the Boxing Day tsunami have also contributed to varying outcomes and changed the power balances between the different stakeholders. This thesis adopts a political ecology framework and actors-oriented approach to provide a comprehensive study of resources management in the fishery sector of southern Thailand and answer the main research question:a?? What and who determines the control over and access to the marine resources in southern Thailand?
