Abstract: In this dissertation, efforts have been made to study the magnetic fields and electromagnetic forces, i.e., cogging torque and unbalanced magnetic pull, in permanent magnet brushless motors with magnets mounted adjacent to the air gap using analytical method. Attentions are concentrated particularly on the instantaneous field distribution in the air gap regions where the magnet pole transition passes over the slot opening and a new analytical model is introduced to accurately consider the slotting effect. Computed results of the flux density using the new analytical solution agree well with the FEM results. The electromagnetic forces are then derived based on the air gap field distributions. The relationship between the magnetic force performances and the design parameters are discussed analytically and visually. To increase the effectiveness of the numerical based optimization process, a combined analytical and numerical optimization method is devised and it is verified by a case study.
