Abstract: Additives are usually indispensable for producing good film coats. In this study, the effects of two important types of additives, namely the plasticizers and water-soluble polymers, on the properties of ethylcellulose films/coatings were investigated. The cause and effect relationship between the plasticizers and the stability of the films exposed to different storage conditions, as well as the consequential effects on drug release were explored. The findings shed light on the mechanisms of change exhibited by the plasticized films subject to different storage conditions, thereby emphasizing the importance of appropriate choice of plasticizers for ethylcellulose coatings. The potential use of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and its derivatives, as polymeric film modifier, for enhancing drug release through ethylcellulose coatings was also studied. The extent of modification of drug release and other properties of the coatings was dependent on the molecular weight, concentration and chemical nature of PVP derivatives employed.
